Late goals defeat Blues but title is lifted

(May 07, 2016)

Sidley United 2 - 3 Old Hastonians - ESFL Division One

Two late goals from the visitors stole a victory against a Sidley side who celebrated the Division One title on Saturday.

A first half which had a rather end of season feel about it saw Sidley dominate possession but fail to create much in the way of clear cut opportunities, with a number of shots going wide of the visitors' goal.

Sidley almost took the lead though on 27 minutes as a mix up at the back allowed Chris Copley a free header but his effort came back off the post before being cleared.

Hastonians had struggled to create much going forward either but led at half time when Chris Moon finished off a neat passing move by firing firmly past Rogers.

The second half continued much in the same vain with Sidley more in control of possession but limited in the chances created. However they levelled on 64 minutes as a good ball in from the left was headed powerfully home by John Carey from just inside the area.

With their tails up Sidley went in search of the winner and on 79 minutes it looked like they'd found it. Good work from substitute Jordan Cole saw his low ball find Lee Roberts in the area who beat the defender and fired home to put Blues in front.

The game appeared to be petering out but Hastonians had other ideas. On 87 minutes a cross from the right right under the crossbar caused Rogers problems and he could only push the ball down to be tapped home by Moon for his second of the game.

And as the game ticked into the final minute another cross from the right round Dan Foster who headed past Rogers to steal a win which 5 minutes earlier did not look likely. Credit to them though for turning the game around.

However, the afternoon really was about crowning a successful season which saw Sidley win the Sussex FA Junior Cup as well as the Division One title. Promotion may well come the way of Old Hastonians as well in the league shake up come summer but Blues can certainly look forward to next season in the Premier Division.

Sidley Team: Rogers, May, Hempe, Funnell, Copley, Carey (Eldridge), Day, Bailey (Cole), Elphick (Mabb), Corke, Roberts.
